I wish I even had the skills to write this in bad Czech, but I don't so English will have to do. My name is Rachael, and I want to learn Czech very badly. Sadly I am broke, my computer sucks, and one of the only Czech words I know for sure is "sluzka". I'm sure my ancestors would be so proud.

Obviously I am in need of help ^^;

11:37 pm - Whoa, I forgot this community was here!

chaoticfluffy
Ok, so, let me try this in bare-bones Czech first...

Potrebuju slova jaka "shit" a "damn," ale taky vety jake "he won't confess, "don't call me here," "I can't talk right now," "this is pointless," "I'm surrounded by idiots," a "leave me alone."

Myslenky?

Ok, and in coherent English...

This month is NaNoWriMo and I'm writing a novel where I have a (female) character who speaks Czech. Unfortunately, I don't (speak it well, at least), and I have zero knowledge of the way Czech people actually, you know, talk when they're not writing textbooks. The character is a detective and has a sarcastic and impatient streak. I need (colloqual czech) translations for basic cop vocab words words like "asshole," "shit," and "damn," but also some phrases and/or one-liners for her to throw out like, "he won't confess," "don't call me here," "i can't talk right now," "this is pointless," "I'm surrounded by idiots," and "leave me alone" (and any other snappy phrases you guys can think of!). These will be mostly directed at family members (with whom she grew up speaking czech) or else mutterings to herself when she gets annoyed at people at work (none of whom speak czech), so we're talking very casual, off-the-cuff language.

So...ideas?

Oh, and if someone could (roughly) translate this paragraph (one side of a phone call) - again, casual/colloquial:
"No, we're still working on it . . . I already told you about him! . . . Can't this wait until I get home and have time to call you? . . . Oh, fine. He's - yes, he's single. He's also my partner, so don't go getting any ideas, mom. . . . I'm not going to tell you his name, he's sitting right here in front of me and he'll know I'm talking about him! . . . *yes,* he's nice . . . Oh, for the love of god, mom, what if I told you he's gay? . . . Well no, he's not, but that's not my point . . . I'm just saying, he's my *partner,* not someone I'm going to check out to see if he has a nice ass! . . . Ok, yes, he has a nice ass. And that's all i'm going to tell you! I have to go, mom. Remember that whole murder thing? Dead guy, criminal on the loose, detectives hot on his trail? Yes, i am more interested in that than telling you about my new partner. Good night, mom!"

I know it's kind of a tall order, but I don't want to even attempt to translate this stuff and end up with a czech speaker who sounds like she's on crack :)

current mood: stupid

Still learning Czech.

Does anyone know of any good Czech/English translation sites, or good pages with pre-written translations for various words and phrases? I think the only words I know presently are 'dlani' and 'lásko/a'. Wow, I'm on a roll!

6:49 pm - Translation?

cloudytm
Alright, I confess. I don't know a lick of Czech. Not even a single word. But I'm interested in the language, as I think it is very pretty.

So in the interests of self-improvement, would anyone care to grab a free song and kindly transcribe and/or translate it for me? God knows I'm lost. I've learned it phonetically, of course, but I'd like to know what it is I'm singing.

It's very pretty.

(it's 'Come To Me' from Les Miserables, if anyone's interested)

If anyone actually listens to my wanky plea, thanks in advance.

Vše se otevírá do nového okna. Kdyby něco nefungovalo, dejte mi vědět. Vše je zabaleno pomocí WinRar.
Enjoy!

5:46 pm - Ahoj! Czech & English for those who wouldn't understand. :)

dangerouss
Ahoj,
konečně jsem se odhodlala sem napsat. :)
Ráda poznávám nové lidi.
~Lucy

Hello,
I've finally decided to write here. :)
I'm Czech so the Czech laguage is my mother tongue. My name is Lucie but a lot of people call me Lucy; I'm 17...
I like reading, writing stories, going for a walk.. I'm interested in learning foreign languages (English and German so far; I'm starting with Russian unfortunately not) but I love Czech the most anyway. I used to write my LJ in English but I've switched to Czech now.
So I decided to take advantage of it; to help someone and/or find other LJ-friends. If anyone needed anything or wanted to add me, feel free to do that!
I like to meet new people.
~Lucy

this community seems to be slightly dead. i guess everyone is speaking perfect Czech now.

if you're still worried about your accent, though, you can watch Pot a slzy Pražského jara, which features a very accomplished Australian conductor, whose Czech is worse than yours. (it's quite long, but he comes in at the very beginning.) if you can roll your R's, you're one step ahead of him. this is also good fodder for Czechs who think that their language is impossible to learn. his grammar, as far as i can tell, is pretty good (and he throws around conjunctions like "ackoliv", which impresses me, because i'll never understand Czech conjunctions, although i don't know if he's using them correctly). but his accent is just horrible.

the music is great though, and the movie is really interesting, about the Prazske Jaro music festival. oh, it's also good because there are a lot of people speaking in English and there are Czech subtitles underneath, which is nice. there's also a crazy piano with three keyboards that play in different keys. i didn't pick up its name and i'm probably describing it wrong because i'm uncultured and don't know a thing about music. but you should see it!

ex_danceoft

3:09 pm - learning

nrw
Howdy,

I'm interested in learning Czech because of ancestry and I'll also be visiting in about a year or so. I've found a pretty good list of online references on this community, but as I'm often far from the internet they aren't too helpful.

Primarily I'm looking for czech language for beginners books and audio lessons. There's a bunch out there so recommendations and comparisons would be appreciated. I'm rather overwhelmed by the Amazon selection. Secondarily I'm looking for any useful travel/culture books. I'll be in Praha and Brno mostly but any books on national parks and outdoorsy stuff in the area would be very welcome.

Hopefully in a couple of months I can join the massacre here. :)
Thanks!

Okay, so this says: If you have any more particular questions, ?I don't want to respond?

Or is this some construction that I don't understand?

EDIT: Or the ne could be ně... which would mean something like I would like to respond to them or something like that?

5:24 pm - Ahoj!

avatar_sitar
Ahoj!

I've read around in this community and all I can say is, wonderful! This community is really impressive, and i'm happy that such a project exists for the czech language.
I've been studying czech as much as I can for about three years, but due to the lack of material locally (the libraries locally do not have a very wide language section past French, Japanese and Spanish...) I haven't really been doing so well.
I've been interested in czech culture and language for a long time, mostly from the influence of my czech relatives, and the goal I've made to myself to find what happened to, and how my relatives still living in the Czech Republic are doing ( I believe their last name(s) are Kincl...).

As of now, i'm using a program called Before You Know It (Lite) to introduce myself to phrases and verbs, and it seems to be doing okay, but not so well in developing beyond simple phrases. :(

After finding this wonderful community though, I hope I might be able to develop my horrible czech to something much better. I'm so glad this community exist, it really looks wonderful!
Hope to see more of you all soon!

6:58 pm - translation question

samostatnost
Čtu "moje první lasky" a mám otáska o překladů.
